If you are looking to set up a shop on a budget and are doing so for the first time, you need to first consider these 2 important questions:

•        What space do you have available for your shop

•        What you are hoping to make in your shop

For example, a crafts person looking to make some gifts like boxes is different from a crafts person looking to set up a business selling gifts in quantity to make a living.

A DIYer person with a home shop looking to make cabinets, tables, and furniture for their home is different from someone crafting the same things for customers.

Some people are looking to be a woodworker primarily in the old school of hand tools while others are primarily a power tool person with little interest in hand tools.

Do your interest lie in fine woodworking like wood carving, lathe turning, scroll sawing…or carpentry or furniture building or just furniture restoration?

These answers will make a difference in the type of shop you should setup.

I often get asked by my students about what the minimal but usable tool set is.

Most of the time they want to know to help a friend or relative get into woodworking… without having to hand off a long and expensive shopping list.

And here’s my take on this…

The 6 Tools To Build Almost Anything

A great “starter pack” for serious woodworkers… which can allow you to build almost anything you want is:

1) Table saw
2) Cordless drill
3) 5″ random orbit sander
4) Router
5) Tape measure
6) Combination square

That’s it.

Pretty simple right?

These 6 tools can build almost any project and will do just fine for small to medium sized projects.

It’s great, especially for a beginner to try this hobby out.

Now, if you’re already a woodworker and you KNOW this hobby is for you… you’re going to want a better shop than this.

Some items you might add are:

1) Power Jointer & Thickness Planer
2) Circular Saw & Jigsaw
3) Some Japanese Saws

These tools would give you a much better shop… and expand your ability to create larger furniture and other high-value pieces.

Of course there is one major downside.

And that’s the fact that they take up space. A scarce thing for most of us.

In fact the other question I get asked a lot is how much space is needed to setup a shop.

My answer:

8×8 feet is plenty!

It’s takes some planning but you can fit a lot into a 8×8 space.
